Have you ever considered working as a Sea TREK Guide, or wondered what the work involves? Here’s a peek at a Guide’s typical day, and what they experience on the job!

The first thing Guides do when they arrive on site is to set up the operation, which includes checking the water and trail conditions, and inspecting the equipment for the day to ensure everything is ready for guests.

Guides receive an anticipated guestlist for each day so that they know what equipment will be needed to run the operation. Then, they pack up and head to the watery worksite. Preparation of the site commences, which might include a beach cleanup, ensuring the trail is clear and handrails and ladders are free of debris, and if operating in an aquarium, staff check the health of the fish, so that guests are welcomed into a pristine environment.

When the guests arrive, the lead Guide for the tour gives a 5-minute safety briefing, where basic underwater communication and instructions are reviewed. Guides ensure all guests understand the underwater signals that will be used during the TREK. They also keep guests “pumped up” for the incredible adventure that awaits!

Guides then assist with the necessary equipment, such as wetsuits and footwear. Once the guests are dressed for the underwater journey, Guides place the helmets on guests’ shoulders and accompany them into the water.

While the adventurers are in the water, Guides are with them every step of the way. Guides walk with guests along a defined path, communicate through hand signals to ensure all are comfortable, take photos and overall, facilitate a fun and controlled underwater experience. They even point out sea life or create bubble rings to entertain guests. Many of our locations also feature artificial reefs or unique enhancements (such as a sunken bus!), which create new homes for sea life and provide vibrant points of interest for guests to observe.

The daily life of a Guide is both exciting and fun. Sea TREK Guides are hardworking and well educated. Guides are required to be Rescue Diver certified and must be able to swim 400 yards within 10 minutes, tread water for at least 10 minutes without a wetsuit, and tow a person 50 yards. Other requirements include First Aid certification and CPR certification with AED and oxygen administration. Guides participate in weekly safety training drills and are constantly working to enhance their skillset. Most Guides are also knowledgeable “locals”– with insight on the native marine life, the best places to eat in town, and what else to check out during your vacation.

Being a Sea TREK Guide is truly a meaningful profession. Guides get to be a part of memorable experiences every single day– such as someone’s first breaths underwater or perhaps even their first time underwater. These encounters are frequently described as life-changing and the best experience of the entire vacation. Guides have the opportunity to share their passion for the underwater world with a broad group of individuals. Not to mention, they get to meet new people from all around the globe!

A lot can happen in a decade. From debates over dress colors to the “Ice Bucket Challenge”, the last ten years have been a whirlwind! In the travel industry, we saw some exciting changes and challenges, like the explosion of Airbnb and the growing desire for travelers to experience eco-friendly destinations.

For Sub Sea Systems, the last decade has been a busy and exciting one. With the creation of new products like Aquaticar, DIVR+ virtual reality snorkeling and SolarCat, and the addition of new SeaTREK locations– we’ve expanded to 27 countries! We’re proud of our successes. We also take great pride in our relationships with SeaTREK operators, some of whom we’ve been partnered with for more than two decades!

One of these incredible partnerships is the well-established relationship we share with Xcaret Park. Located in Cancun, Mexico, Xcaret is a landmark in the Riviera Maya. Since its opening in 1990, the park has welcomed more than 23 million visitors from all over the world!

Xcaret was founded by architect Miguel Quintana Pali, who initially acquired five hectares in the Riviera Maya with plans to construct a private residence. However, while surveying the land, he discovered that it had vast cenotes and a network of underground rivers. He knew this incredible place could not be kept privately; it had to be shared with the rest of the world. Thus, a partnership was established with brothers Oscar, Marcos and Carlos Constandse, and years later Xcaret was born. Since its opening in December 1990, Xcaret has been recognized as one of the most famous attractions in the Cancun-Riviera Maya tourist destination.

The park is comprised of 50 natural and cultural attractions. From the moment guests step on the property, they are surrounded by nature, from native flora and fauna, to underground rivers, lagoons, and cenotes. In addition to tropical surroundings and cultural demonstrations, Xcaret offers a wide range of activities for all ages. Visitors can take a snorkel tour where they encounter tropical sea life, or get up close and personal with sharks and stingrays. And of course, guests can take an incredible SeaTREK helmet dive at two separate locations within the park– the Caleta and Stingray Lagoon. Xcaret is the largest and longest operating SeaTREK location in the world. To date, they have welcomed more than 1.4 million TREKKERs!

Over the past ten years, Xcaret has received multiple awards, primarily for its creative vision and dedication to conservation. Accolades include the IAAPA Liseberg Applause Award for the World’s Best Park; the Travvy Award for Best International Theme Park, three years in a row; the 2018 Prevue Visionary Award (gold); and the “Obras del Año” awards for both “Economics Innovation, Tourism and Hospitality”, and “People’s Choice”.
Sub Sea Systems and SeaTREK are pleased to add to this ever-growing list of recognitions by awarding Xcaret with the first-ever SeaTREK Operator of the Decade Award!

Sub Sea Systems’ CEO Jim Mayfield presented a stunning art glass statue to Miguel and his executive team earlier this month at an awards ceremony held at Xcaret. De Palm Island enforces strict sustainability policies and is Earth Check Silver certified. The island is committed to employing local residents and sourcing local products. De Palm also works closely with Scubble Bubbles, a conservation group focused on involving local youth in ocean conservation. Scubble Bubbles maintains a coral nursery along the Sea TREK trail at De Palm Island. Staghorn coral fragments are grown on special coral trees until mature enough to transplant into the nearby reef. The project has been tremendously successful. Sea TREK staff also regularly participate in beach cleanup events and lionfish hunting tournaments.
To add to its philanthropic endeavors, De Palm is also active in several charities, including Family First, Micky’s Foundation and the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary.

As part of the Sea TREK Operator of the Year Award, De Palm Tours received an engraved crystal globe, certificate, and digital insignia for use on their website and marketing materials.

My name is Levi Leonce. I’m from a small island in the Caribbean called St. Lucia and it is simply beautiful! I’ve lived on this picturesque island for almost my entire life. Currently, I’m in the U.S. pursuing my bachelor’s degree and have spent several weeks as an intern for Sub Sea Systems. As a guest writer for this week’s blog, I’d like to share with you my travel guide to St. Lucia.

Fourteen degrees north and sixty degrees west, you'll find our little paradise. With only 238 square miles of land, the island is home to a little more than 180 thousand people. It is found in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean, and it is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway with your friends, family or significant other. Tourism is the main economic industry on the island and travelers can be bombarded with things to do. However, I will give you some advice on the must do’s and the don’ts when exploring St. Lucia.

First off, if you’re planning a vacation to our island, I recommend you come during the summer months between June and August because this is when tourism seasons starts to die down and you get smaller, more personalized, down-to-earth experiences. It’s almost always warm and sunny in St. Lucia, even during the quieter seasons, with a few sessions of rain every now and then.

I recommend packing light, thin clothing, and feel free to bring all your bright colors! Also, you probably will want to bring all of your swimsuits. Be sure to leave some space in your suitcase for any local clothing you may purchase and bring back with you.

Fun fact, St. Lucia is home to the world’s only drive-in volcano! The volcano has been dormant for thousands of years and has been transformed into a beautiful and relaxing attraction for both locals and visitors alike. Located in Soufriere, on the southern part of the island, the volcano is home to various hot springs and a sulfur mud bath that does wonders for the skin. (It is actually my personal favorite place to be on the island.) I would recommend this to everyone who visits, simply because you can never go wrong with a nice, rejuvenating sulfur bath.

I also recommend you take part in tours and excursions, specifically Sea TREK, snorkeling, ATV riding and ziplining through the rainforest. For the more adventurous, take a hike up our twin pitons or through the rainforest.

If you’re a diver or you just want to snorkel I recommend you get in contact with my dad, Anthony Leonce, phone number 1-758-484-3346. He owns a local dive company and will get you to the best snorkel and dive sites on the island, and the best prices, too! If, however, you want to snorkel on your own, you can always head up to Pigeon Island Beach to snorkel in a safe, protected area. Pigeon Island Beach is located on the north side of the island and houses a national park, a few restaurants and several hotels. The beach is also home to Sea Adventures, Inc., a tourism operation that takes you on amazing Sea TREK experiences, among other exciting things. There is something for everyone to do, and it never gets overly crowded; you always have your own personal space to relax. In addition, there is 24-hour security. It is the safest beach on the island– and my personal favorite.

Obviously, after a nice day at the beach, you will need to get some good food to eat. My favorite place to go is a small sushi restaurant called Rituals Sushi in the Rodney Bay Marina on the north side of the island. I recommend this spot for all sushi and seafood lovers. Their restaurant is right next to a marina, so you get to enjoy the ambiance of the ocean while you enjoy your food. Also, be sure to get your fair share of local street restaurants and cuisines. Higher-end restaurants may not reflect the true taste of the island.

If nightlife is what you want, attend our famous Friday night street parties, where you get to mingle and party with the locals. We also have a fish festival that happens every Friday night at two locations on the island, and that always makes for a good night out. Or, visit the Baywalk Shopping Mall and the Rodney Bay area, where you will find the local casino and all the local bars and grills.

Unlike other countries, during the weekdays St. Lucia does not have a very active nightlife, most businesses close at five and most stores close at about eight. The latest store closes at roughly around ten, and restaurants and bars shut down at about midnight. However on weekends, stores extend their hours, and restaurants, clubs, bars and grills usually stay open till two in the morning! Since tourism is our number one economic industry, gratuities have slowly integrated into our culture. It’s becoming a norm in the service industry, and there is no cap on how much one can tip; your contribution is based on the quality of service you feel you have received.

If you are looking for a place to stay during your visit to St. Lucia, you have a number of options. For someone looking for a high-end, 5-star hotel, I recommend Jade Mountain Resort. You can find out all you need to know about them at www.jademountain.com. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a place that is budget-friendly but still offers great quality service and a high-end experience, consider Bay Gardens Beach Resort and Spa or the all-inclusive Windjammer Landings Villa Beach Resort. Both are wonderful resorts that provide excellent service and will give you the best experience for your dollar.

If you’re staying at a hotel, I highly recommend you use the hotel’s taxi services to get around the country. Be aware that occasionally, local taxi drivers will overcharge because of the incorrect stereotype that all tourists are rich! If you really know your way around the country and want to blend in with the locals, you can take the public buses, or you can rent a vehicle. Unfortunately, we have no Uber or Lyft services on the island...yet.

We don’t have tight restrictions on domestic or wild animals in St. Lucia, so you will probably see animals, like cows or goats, just roaming around the forested areas! We have wild dogs and cats as well. Iguanas are native to the island, however, there are not many left, so we protect them. The national bird is a parrot species called the Amazona Versicolour; it is endangered and therefore also protected.

The people of St. Lucia are very friendly and open to interaction. It’s customary to greet people when you meet them. Don’t be alarmed when everyone greets you every time we see you!Sub Sea Systemshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13489747672279395731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1565282864639573643.post-15668181034752852972020-01-08T14:23:00.000-08:002020-01-08T14:33:17.840-08:00Our (Exciting) Year in Numbers!

Anthony has been a member of the Sea TREK family for close to 7 years and his operation has won several awards. He is a well-respected member of the Sea TREK community and we’re excited for you to get to know him a little better.
We appreciate Levi and Anthony and the contributions both have made to our company and the Sea TREK program.
Each year, Reef Alliance (a conservation program sponsored by Sub Sea Systems) and its partners participate in the International Coastal Cleanup, a worldwide volunteer effort organized by the Ocean Conservancy.

Founded in 2009, the Reef Alliance program promotes sustainable diving practices and environmental education. The program's mission is to educate, create awareness, and encourage proactive conservation efforts in local communities. Every year, the Sea TREK operator that best exemplifies the program's goals is recognized with the Reef Alliance Award. We're extremely proud to announce Delphinus as the recipient of the 2019 Reef Alliance Award.

In 2019, Delphinus hosted multiple events for International Coastal Cleanup. Over 120 volunteers collected nearly 2600 lbs. (1178 kg) of trash and debris from local beaches, turtle nesting grounds and a mangrove habitat. In addition to cleaning up these vital resources, Delphinus continued its community outreach and conservation education efforts.
In January, Delphinus held several events during World Environmental Education Day. Utilizing its interactive dolphin experiences, Delphinus curated strong emotional connections between participants and the dolphins. The event was combined with an educational message focused on threatened marine environments. Participants left with an indelible memory and a stronger passion to conserve the marine environment.

Delphinus has developed The Environmental Education Plan, which consists of several active campaigns. One of these campaigns, the Environmental Leadership Program, provides environmental training for the organization’s staff. 250 staff members participated in 14 sessions.

Delphinus is also one of the main conservation promoters for the endangered Vaquita, Mexico's only endemic cetacean and the world's most rare marine mammal that is on the brink of extinction. Through donations and its social campaign, #SOSVaquita, Delphinus draws awareness to the threatened species and supports ongoing efforts to protect Vaquitas.

There’s no question that for most of us, boating is just plain fun. Being out on the water with friends and family can be relaxing, or exhilarating!

Unsurprisingly, several studies have identified dozens of unintentional and unexpected hazards to the environment associated with boating, which might have many reevaluating how they spend their days on the neighborhood lake. Boating can be a real detriment to the health of our waterways, sea life, and surrounding land. Heavily trafficked waterways and the presence of vessels increase the growth of algae. Deposits left from boats can change water chemistry. And, wildlife can be negatively impacted by boat fumes and the chemicals used to clean watercraft.

But there are options for eco-conscious boaters! Solar power is now being utilized in boating operations. In fact, experts say that the aquatic applications of solar are evolving faster than ever, as people seek a way to enjoy boating without contributing to waterway damage or loss of sea life.

As a company, Sub Sea Systems is always seeking new ways to get people to enjoy the water while respecting the environment. In 2001, we began producing FunCat, an electric catamaran designed for boaters who sought a way to enjoy the water, without the damaging effects of a typical boat. FunCat catamaran owners loved the easy to drive, easy to dock and easy to store FunCat! FunCats also proved to be a great rental product for the boating industry, allowing even inexperienced boaters to steer their way across the water.

In 2018, as demand for eco-friendly options grew, we upgraded the FunCat to include solar panels. The solar panels offered FunCat boaters additional time on the water and a vessel that utilized no gasoline or oil. As interest in a solar boating option grew, we rebranded our popular FunCat as SolarCat Solar-Electric Catamarans. And, this year, we launched a brand new website, solarcatusa.com.

There’s more to the SolarCat than just its flashy solar panels. SolarCat personal catamarans are designed and constructed in the USA of high quality, long-lasting materials. As easy as ever, SolarCats require no boating experience. Two switches propel the SolarCat forward, backward, left or right, or even a super smooth 360°. Every catamaran includes a sunshade for comfort on the sunniest of days, and plenty of storage for personal items. One of the compartments can even be used as an ice chest, for that just-caught fish or a bottle of champagne! The on-board battery charger ensures you’ll have plenty of juice for a leisurely day on the water. SolarCats are built to last and include a 12-month warranty on parts. And, Sub Sea Systems’ amazing SolarCat team members, Keenan and Greg, are here to help with outstanding product support.

At Sub Sea Systems, we create immersive and interactive products and programs for the marine tourism industry. From our incredibly popular Sea TREK helmet diving experience, available across the globe, to our newly upgraded SolarCat solar-electric personal catamarans, we’re always looking for fun and creative ways to get people in and under the water.

Our latest product endeavor entails an ever-so-slight submersion (snorkeling) with incredibly detailed virtual reality content. In partnership with Ballast Technologies, Inc., a world leader in aquatic virtual reality, we are releasing three VR snorkeling systems: DIVR, DIVR+ and Deep Dive VR. Welcome to the next level of immersive virtual reality!

VR snorkeling combines the neutral buoyancy of water with the immersion of virtual reality. The patent-pending technology includes a waterproof virtual reality headset combined with a library of high-quality VR content- from coral reef dives to shark encounters, an Atlantis adventure, and even an out-of-this-world space journey!

DIVR

DIVR allows participants to float freely while experiencing neutral buoyancy, audio and 360° virtual content. The DIVR system is portable, and can be used in any shallow swimming pool. Participants wear a floatation belt, VR headset with snorkel, and a secure tether.

DIVR+

The DIVR+ system is a portable snorkeling system with sensory effects. Custom, stationary thrusters emit fluctuating thrusts of water and multiple bubble-induced sensations, which are synchronized with the visual and audio content. Participants feel the tickle of a school of fish or the rushing sensation of water as they zoom through tunnels. In the outer space journey, participants feel the vibration of passing meteors as they approach the space station. The system sets up along a pool edge in minutes, so guests can enjoy the 360° virtual adventure in neutral buoyancy, in no time.

Deep Dive VR

Deep Dive VR is a fully self-contained, standalone system. It comes complete with a shallow acrylic pool, 10 VR snorkeling stations, and a back-of-house building with an equipment room, briefing room and top deck lounge. It’s a complete turnkey setup!

Stephen Greenwood, CEO of Ballast shared this about these amazing new products, “Pairing virtual reality with water may not seem like the most obvious match, but once people try it, it's clear just how powerful the combination is. When guests are suspended in water, there is a freedom that allows for absolute immersion, which is impossible to achieve in any other way. Our experiences have already delighted over 400,000 customers.

At Ballast, we've been extremely proud to pioneer this technology and introduce the world to aquatic VR. Our amazing partnership with Sub Sea Systems has enabled us to take our systems to the next level and develop heightened sensory experiences while delivering the best customer service possible. We're grateful to Jim Mayfield and the entire team at Sub Sea Systems for their extensive knowledge of water-based technology, deep industry relationships, and for our shared vision of the future of aquatic attractions.”
Q: Tell us about your family

I have a five-year-old daughter, Aria, who is intelligent beyond her years and is the cutest thing on planet earth. My mom, who does interior decorating, is basically a cross between every Hallmark mom and Martha Stewart… in short, she is amazing. My dad is my hero and idol; I joined the military because of how much I look up to him. He’s currently battling Alzheimer’s disease, but still maintains his daily quota of dad jokes.

Q: Where did you go to school?

I went to The Art Institute of San Francisco.

Q: What do you do for fun?

I enjoy taking long road trips and spending time alone in nature, where I practice my photography. I also really enjoy freediving, when I’m able to.

Q: What are you most proud of?

My daughter Aria, of course!

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Anything is possible as long as you’re willing to ignore the naysayers. That includes yourself, sometimes.

Q: What would your co-workers be surprised to learn about you?

I don’t think anything would surprise them, they think I’m pretty weird.

We’re not sure we’d call him weird (although he does do some pretty realistic impressions of Family Guy characters), but Myles is definitely fun, and we’re grateful to have his positive spirit, incredible work ethic and creativity in the SSS office!

We’re talking about Sub Sea’s latest endeavor, virtual reality snorkeling! This new and exciting experience is actually THREE different products, with three different opportunities to offer virtual reality in an entirely new and unique way: DIVR, DIVR+, and Deep Dive VR.

The VR snorkeling product line was created in partnership with Ballast Technology, Inc. out of San Francisco, California. Born from a chance meeting at a trade show, the Sub Sea team joined forces with the Ballast team to develop, market and sell these incredible systems. Ballast Technologies is the leading provider of aquatic virtual reality. They were the first to design and patent an underwater VR headset, and their premium product, VRSlide, was the world’s first virtual reality system for water slides.

So, what are these new and super cool products? Virtual reality snorkeling is digital entertainment, allowing your mind to explore while your body feels the extraordinary full sensory experience of a near-zero gravity environment. Guests feel as if they are actually soaring through the water, as they explore new worlds previously only accessible to scuba divers, deep ocean submersibles, and astronauts.

All three systems allow guests to enjoy this incredible experience! The difference is really in the installation. DIVR takes up a very small footprint. All that’s needed is a shallow swimming pool area large enough to accommodate participants in snorkeling positions without touching one another. During this experience, participants wear a floatation belt, underwater VR headset and a snorkel. A swim tether is attached to an anchor on the bottom of the pool. The video content begins with the tap of an NFC launcher card.

With DIVR+, participants experience multiple, in-water sensory effects in unison with the visual content. Participants hold on to stationary thrusters that produce varying flows of water and air bubbles. Guests feel as if they are actually zooming through the water, corkscrewing through tunnels and feeling the rumbling vibrations of swimming with a pod of dolphins! The stations are designed for setup along the edge of a pool.

Last but not least, Deep Dive VR takes the stage as a fully self-contained, standalone system. Complete with its own shallow acrylic pool with 10 DIVR+ stations, and “back-of-house” building comprised of a briefing room, equipment room, rooftop seating area and water entry platform.

DIVR, DIVR+ and Deep Dive VR are the world’s premiere virtual reality snorkeling systems. Dive in and add this incredible experience to your operation. Contact us to set up an in-person pool demonstration. We’ll also be exhibiting and demonstrating at the upcoming DEMA and IAAPA Expo trade shows in Orlando.

On Saturday, September 21st, Sub Sea Systems’ staff joined over one million ocean lovers to remove trash from our beloved waterways. Sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy, the annual International Coastal Cleanup event focuses on freeing our oceans and coastlines from the global challenges of trash and pollution.

The Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit organization, has held cleanups across the globe for over 30 years. More than 100 countries participate in cleanups. The Conservancy provides volunteers more than just a lengthy list of cleanup locations and cleanup kits. It also collects data and reports on cleanup results. Last year, volunteers picked up over 23 million pounds of trash in a single day!

Sub Sea Systems’ team combined forces with the Greater Sierra River Cleanup crew, who removed debris and trash from the Sierra watersheds. 169 volunteers scoured ten different shorelines for three hours. The volunteers covered 11 miles of coastal terrain on foot and recovered 1,500 pounds of trash and recycling, which equates to 3/4th of a 20-yard dumpster. These results will be added to the 10-year totals of nearly 860 tons of trash and recyclables from more than 3,000 miles of river in the Sierras.

While plastic trash accounts for the largest percentage of debris, cigarette butts are the highest singular item collected. In 2017, almost 6 million butts were picked up during the Conservancy’s cleanup. This year, the Sierra crew picked up over 800, with Sub Sea’s team collecting just shy of 400. Additionally, SSS volunteers collected over 100 metal bottle caps and 100 pieces of recyclable paper.

In addition to coastline cleanups, some participants take it a step further. Project Aware works with scuba divers across the globe to protect underwater environments. Project Aware divers span 182 countries and have removed 1,493,381 debris items from 444 miles of underwater habitat.
Have you ever wanted to swim with whale sharks? Or snorkel a pristine, vibrant reef? Perhaps explore the depths of the ocean, or even deep space?

Sub Sea Systems and its partner, Ballast Technologies, have created a series of underwater virtual reality systems! DIVR, DIVR+ and Deep Dive VR will transport guests visually, physically and emotionally, into undiscovered territories, all while floating in water! Utilizing a snorkel and waterproof VR headset, explorers can glide alongside graceful humpbacks, feel the sensation of tickling tentacles, and experience a rush of water while zooming past sunken shipwrecks... all from within a swimming pool!

Born from a chance meeting at a trade show, a shared passion for the water, and a mutual drive to introduce new experiences to the industry, Ballast Technologies and Sub Sea Systems have joined forces to create these unique systems. Ballast Technologies is best known for its lightweight VRSlide System, which is utilized at water parks across the world. Over 270,000 water park enthusiasts have worn Ballast’s VR headset while traversing water slides such as Galaxy Erding in Germany!

Underwater virtual reality is the newest in digital entertainment, allowing one’s mind to explore while the body feels an extraordinary, full-sensory experience of a near-zero gravity environment. When submerged in water, virtual reality becomes even more powerful! The innovative underwater VR systems transport guests into new worlds via patent-pending hardware and proprietary software technology.

Three different Deep Dive experiences are bring created: DIVR, DIVR+ and Deep Dive VR.

DIVR is a portable virtual reality snorkeling system that allows water parks, hotels, and resorts to transform any ordinary pool into a vibrant, exciting attraction, where guests drift through coral reefs, shipwrecks and exotic locations. DIVR requires a small footprint– an area large enough to accommodate participants in snorkeling positions, without making contact with one another. During the experience, participants wear a flotation belt, underwater VR headset and snorkel. A swim tether is attached to an anchor on the bottom of the pool to maintain the guest in position. The video content begins with the tap of an NFC launcher card. In every direction guests turn their heads they see a different view of the virtual world.

DIVR+ is a portable virtual reality snorkeling system with multiple in-water sensor effects. Participants hold onto a thruster that produces water and air bubbles, which create tactile sensations. These elements are queued in perfect unison with the visual content, resulting in an incredibly realistic VR experience. Participants feel as if they are actually zooming through the water, corkscrewing through tunnels, or feeling the rumbling vibrations of swimming with a pod of dolphins. During the experience, participants wear a belt to assist with floatation, underwater VR headset and snorkel. The video content begins with the tap of an NFC launcher card. Almost immediately, the participant begins to feel jets and pulses of water and the tickle of air bubbles across their body as they move through a stunning virtual world. Dramatic visual cues sync with cavitation in the thruster and transmit vibration through the participant’s hands and arms.

Deep Dive VR is a fully self-contained, standalone system comprised of two structural components– a back-of-house building and a stainless steel and acrylic pool, 3 ft (1 m) deep. The pool features 10 individual underwater VR stations with acrylic dividers that provide separation between participants. Participants watch a one-minute orientation video, ascend an outdoor staircase to the launch platform, enter the water via a vertical ladder, and walk to their designated station. During the experience, participants don a floatation belt, underwater VR headset and snorkel. The video content begins with the tap of an NFC launcher card. Like DIVR+, participants feel jets and pulses of water, the tickle of air bubbles, and a rumbling vibration, all synced in unison with the visual content. This incredible virtual world is more real than ever before!

We are excited to exhibit these new products at several upcoming industry trade shows!

Headed for a cruise vacation? If you envision crowded beaches, long wait times, and scheduling hassles, consider a cruise that includes a stop at a private island. Over the past several years, cruise lines have ramped up private island excursions, which allow passengers to enjoy unique attractions, pristine private beaches, and top-notch service that is “just for them”.

Cruise lines’ private islands allow passengers to live the Caribbean dream. They can enjoy perfect white-sand beaches, clear water, colorful fish, coral reefs and lush fauna — and an invitation to have fun all day! Each island has something out of the ordinary to offer cruise passengers. Below are some of the cruise lines’ private destination offerings, and what makes each distinctive.

Castaway Cay (pronounced “key”), was developed by Disney, so it’s not surprising that it’s all about family fun! Guests can choose from a wide variety of private island activities, including a kids’ 2,400-square-foot water play area, a gaming pavilion, a sports beach, and of course, Disney character greetings! The pristine beach offers sparkling water, an “adults only” area, and boat rentals, including FunCat electric catamarans.

Castaway Cay also offers intriguing snorkeling. Two submarines from the retired 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride at the Magic Kingdom are submerged in the snorkeling area of the Family Beach. You’ll also discover statues of Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse underwater in this area, too!
Fun fact: Some Disney Cast Members actually live on the island year-round!
Half Moon Cay, Holland America Cruise Line

A slice of heaven, Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas is a stunning paradise. Crystal blue water and powdery white sand await guests at this private sanctuary. Take a horseback ride on the beach, quench your thirst at the “I Wish I Could Stay Here Forever” bar, kayak the lagoon, or let someone else drive while you enjoy a leisurely glass-bottom boat tour. There’s even a chapel for weddings and vow renewal ceremonies!

Fun fact: Half Moon Cay has won Porthole Cruise Magazine’s Best Private Island award for 17 consecutive years!

Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line

There’s so much to do at this stop in the Bahamas, that you might have trouble deciding! From peaceful, uncrowded, white sand beaches to heart-pounding parasailing, there’s fun for everyone. Don’t miss the stingray encounter, which garners a five-star rating from TripAdvisor. Guests can enjoy a speedboat ride to Stingray City, then enter the deep water, (an easy step from the large swim platform) and meet these fabulous critters. Even non-swimmers can enjoy the rays!

Fun fact: Great Stirrup Cay was the first cruise line private island, and was acquired way back in the 1970s!!
Princess Cays, Princess & Carnival Cruise Lines

Actually, a single island located in the Bahamas, Princess Cays offers everything you’d expect from a private island with an additional layer of exclusivity- private, air-conditioned bungalows! These colorful, adults-only bungalows each feature a ceiling fan, table, and chairs inside, sun loungers outside, and an individual outdoor, open-air shower. The friendly, attentive staff is available to take drink orders. Guests also enjoy the use of a motorized cart for transportation. When you are ready to take a dip or walk along the shoreline, just walk down the path to the beach. Not into extra privacy? Take a bike adventure along the beach to the rolling hills and see sparkling lagoons framed by mangroves, or hop on a clear-bottom kayak or dune buggy and create your own adventure!

Fun fact: Getting a chair in the shade is never an issue on Princess Cay. There are over 3,000 beach chairs on the island!
Harvest Caye, Norwegian Cruise Line

It’s all about the location at Harvest Caye! The island is situated in Belize, which is known for its ecotourism. The island’s offerings include some unique experiences, such as exploring Mayan ruins, visiting a spice farm, or exploring incredible, saltwater estuaries teeming with wildlife. Guests can relax on white sands, enjoy exciting ziplining adventures, snorkel the world's second-largest barrier reef, or take an easy ride on a brand new SolarCat solar-electric catamaran!

Fun fact: The 400 staff members working on the island are locals. All the restaurants, amenities and shopping stores are also locally owned.

Labadee, Royal Caribbean

Coasting takes on a whole new meaning at this tropical locale in Haiti. If you’ve “been there, done that” with ziplining and you’re looking for something different, Labadee offers you Dragon’s Tail Coaster, which reaches 680 feet before whooshing down a hill at 30 MPH. With 360-degree turns, as well as dips, waves, and curves, this thrill ride is sure to keep you entertained. However, if you’re less than “thrilled” at the idea of flying down the side of a steep mountain, don’t worry. You can climb the only icebergs in the Caribbean, or just kick back and relax, with the island’s signature drink— the Labadoozie!

Fun fact: Labadee is actually NOT an island. It’s located on Haiti's northern coast

CocoCay, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Want a “Perfect Day at CocoCay”? That might mean conquering the tallest waterslide in North America! CocoCay’s waterpark boasts 13 waterslides. If you prefer your thrills on the dry side, drift “up, up, and away” 450 feet above the ground in CocoCay’s helium balloon. If your interests lie more with relaxation and libations, you won’t be disappointed. CocoCay’s Oasis Lagoon, the Caribbean's largest freshwater pool, has a massive swim-up bar and a beautiful, beachfront infinity pool. When stomach growling commences, there’s a variety of dining venues, which are included at no additional cost. Five dining venues are located throughout the island.

Fun fact: It is not uncommon to see wild chickens roaming the grounds, along with iguanas that sometimes get close to the dining areas to see if any scraps of food rolled away.

Coming Soon: Lighthouse Point, Disney Cruise Line

On the horizon, the newest private island destination– Lighthouse Point! Disney recently announced this development, and revealed that the island experience will celebrate Bahamian folklore, local artists, culture, nature, and of course, special Disney touches.

Disney will also be directly involved in conservation efforts to preserve and protect the island’s natural environment.

Construction at Lighthouse Point has not started yet but will begin after an Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan are reviewed and accepted by the Government of The Bahamas. Stay tuned!

Sub Sea Systems’ favorite frequent flyer, Carl Hanson, was off to the friendly skies again last month, this time for the long journey to our newest Sea TREK helmet diving location in the Philippines! With an opening date set for August 21, we’re excited about this new location and Carl’s journey to ensure their success. Here’s what Carl shared about his latest adventure:

Where is the new location?

Cebu Ocean Park, in the Philippines. It’s the first marine park in Visayas and Mindanao, and the largest and deepest Oceanarium in the Philippines. The park is home to around 200 different animal species, and as many at 3,000 people will be able to visit the park at any given time.

Tell us about your travel route.
I traveled from Sacramento, California to LA, LA to Hong Kong, and Hong Kong to Cebu. ✈️

What makes this location and park unique?

The area itself is outside of Mactan, a major tourism hub, but it’s far enough away to give visitors a more “local” feel of the Philippines. Cebu is known worldwide for whale shark swimming, so travelers interested in sea life have an additional opportunity to learn more about our oceans and conservation efforts. Cebu Ocean Park is committed to promoting environmental awareness and offers educational displays and attractions to engage kids and adults alike.

What kind of work did you do while visiting Cebu?

I set up a brand new Sea TREK backpack system. I trained staff, met with marketing teams and management staff, and met the facility owner to educate him and help set expectations. Basically, everything from scratch! The facility is so new that while I was there, they were still working on the details such as laying flooring. I was amazed to see how fast things were being done.

What did you do when you had downtime?

I ate… a lot! The food there is so inexpensive- a buffet for $3! Local food was plentiful and varied, due to the Philippine’s unique mix of many cultures. The food is only eaten with hands, though, no utensils!

I got to participate in a boodle fight, which is a Filipino tradition! A boodle fight is a culinary experience where a big pile of food is placed in the middle of a table that is lined with banana leaves. Water jugs are placed on the side, used for hand washing, just before the “fight” starts. No utensils are used…just hands. The boodle “fight” originated with the Philippine's military, and symbolizes camaraderie and brotherhood. Definitely not a fine dining experience, but an experience just the same!

I also had the incredible experience of swimming with whale sharks in Oslob. Whale sharks can reach up to 40 feet (12 m) in length, and their mouths are over 5 feet (1.5 m) wide! However, they do not have teeth, and their throats are only the size of a quarter. I saw 5 of these all at once!

What are some of the challenges the operator faces and how he is overcoming them?

Currently, their biggest challenge is completing the facility. The owner of the facility is actually now living there, to ensure things are being done perfectly and in a timely manner. He’s there 24/7 and really cares about the facility being done correctly. I was there for approximately 1 week and I was impressed by how much they got done in such a short period of time.

Talk about the staff:

The staff is motivated and hard-working. They really want to do things right. They’re definitely a “no challenge is too big” group!

What surprised you the most about this location?

I didn’t realize that the area is considered “up and coming” and thought it would be more tourist-y.

When will this new location open?

The target date is August 21st for both the aquarium and for Sea TREK!

We can’t wait to celebrate the success of Cebu Ocean Park. Stay tuned into our Facebook and Instagram pages, where we will be sharing images and updates!
Q: How long have you worked with Sub Sea Systems?

Javi: I've been working for SSS since March 2014, but have been in contact with the company since 2002 when I was in charge of the Sea TREK, SNUBA and snorkel tour at Xel-Ha Park. I'd like to say that I've been around for a long time!

Fili: It's been 6 years since I started working with the Sea TREK experience as a licensee of Sub Sea Systems. I soon realized that it would be very interesting to represent the company for Spain, and I now represent Europe, too!

Ad: Since May 2014

Takeshi: It has been about one month!

Q What is your title?

Javi: I'm Regional Coordinator for the Mexican Caribbean and Belize regions… and wherever my boss sends me.

Fili: I am Sub Sea Systems’ Sea TREK Operator, Fun CAT Operator and Representative for Europe.

Ad: I am the Regional Director of the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East & Africa), Russia, & Turkey.
Q: When people ask you what you do for a living, what do you tell them?
Javi: I say: “Have you seen activities that allow participants to walk underwater while wearing a helmet? Well, I do that!”

Fili: I usually say, “I develop unique and innovative experiences focused on tourism. You have to try them!”

Ad: I hunt for potential prospects and projects for Sub Sea Systems in my region. Once found, I help my clients to purchase our products. I combine my knowledge about our products and possibilities, and advise them which product and programs will work for them. I support them during the complete process of purchase, engineering, installation, startup and even in the years after.

Takeshi: Marine activity production and construction sales, and diving business in general.

Javi: I really like to train the new divers/Guides.

Fili: When I finish the day, knowing that I have managed to make at least one person happier.

Ad: Meeting new people with all kinds of different needs, then finding the best solution to create a win-win situation for them and us. Once a product has been sold, I enjoy assisting during the engineering, construction and installing phase, and training the staff.

Takeshi: There are a lot! First of all, going beyond the norm and trying something new. Working on a project that combines creativity with marine activities.
Q: Tell us about your family.

Javi: My son Luca and my wife Romi are the lights of my life. I also have my parents and brother, who live in Argentina.

Fili: My greatest treasures are my two daughters, and of course my mother. They are for me the most important pillars. Every day, I strive to do my best to keep moving forward for them.

Ad: I have a fantastic and lovely wife named Evelien, who supports me in everything I do. Since I was 16 years old, she has been the love of my life. We are celebrating our 35th anniversary in August. We have 2 beautiful and lovely children. The oldest is our son Stefano, who lives in Spain. He is the owner of a company named Oasis Europe. Which offers rental management, property optimization to property owners. Our daughter Naomi is an assistant broker for a real estate company and lives near us.

Takeshi: My daughter will enter University in Tokyo next year, so she will leave the small island of Okinawa. My daughter's character is very similar to mine, so we often disagree with each other! When I think about being separated next year, I feel a little sad. I have a son in high school. He wears a headset every day and plays only online games. However, he’s very good at snorkeling, so I think that I will teach him scuba diving. My wife is a person who is busy and moving around, who cannot take a break at all. She is a wonderful woman.

Q: What is your favorite work memory / funniest thing that has happened to you at work / craziest thing that has happened at work?

Javi: My favorite memories are the good moments spent with my co-workers, Calin and Josue. I also have a wonderful time with visitors or potential new operators. When I show them “my operations” and they see how many helmets we have in only one location (Xcaret, for example, utilizes 50 helmets every 30 minutes in just one of their two locations!) I love to show them how many safety divers are there taking care of the people and they see how well organized we are and they finally ask me: “and you trained them all?” And I say: “Yes!”, proudly. Bottom line: I LOVE MY JOB!

Ad: Too many to write about! My former and current colleagues all know I am a little crazy and I always try to bring fun in anything I do. I like to surprise people with my “magic dice” and doing that, they all will remember me with a smile.

Fili: One of the most beautiful things I’ve experienced happened during a Sea TREK, with a grandfather and his grandson. Developing an experience that is able to unite generations at 5 meters deep is wonderful. Neither of them knew how to swim and they could never imagine, that they could be together feeding the fish underwater. The grandfather was crying with emotion, seeing his grandson at his side.

Takeshi: There are so many, I’m not sure how to answer! I was attacked and bitten by a Hammerhead Shark. Humped by a Humpback whale in the chest. I have a lot of episodes in the sea! Things that were fun, scary, and dangerous!

We hope this interview made you smile as much as it made us smile! We’re grateful for these fine individuals and proud to have them represent Sub Sea Systems. A big thank you to Javi, Ad, Fili and Takeshi!

It's never easy saying goodbye to a coworker, especially one who has been with the company for nearly a decade! This week we're dedicating our blog to Christina Azbill, Sub Sea Systems’ uber-talented Graphic Designer. Although she will be sincerely missed, we’re excited to share that Christina is pursuing a new endeavor…and major life change! In her own words, here's what Christina had to share about her history with Sub Sea, and her new adventure.

What has prompted your departure from Sub Sea Systems?

I had the opportunity to purchase a business and become an entrepreneur. My daughter, Ashley, and I are the proud new owners of a restaurant. It’s an established restaurant in my hometown. We'll be serving up burgers, pouring beer, and scooping ice cream!

Tell us more!

I live in a little town called Garden Valley, in the beautiful foothills of Northern California. There are few restaurants that serve locals, and this particular restaurant is a popular, well-known spot. Our community is very supportive and really wants a place to dine out. Soon, Ashley and I will be serving both locals and tourists alike, seven days a week!

Red Rooster Burgers & Brew

What will your new workday look like?

Our hours are 11am-8pm– serving both lunch and dinner. It’ll be a long day!

What is the most exciting (and scariest) aspect of this career move?

I am most excited to be working alongside my daughter– who also happens to be pregnant with my first grandchild! I’ll be able to see her grow into the best Mom ever. I’m sure that will prove to be both exciting and challenging.

The scariest part of this major change is that I will be leaving the career I worked so hard to enter into, graphic design. I was a single Mom with two little kids in tow (Ashley and James), while I attended college to obtain my degree. It was six years of very hard work and a lot of challenges!

What will you miss the most about working at SSS?

I will miss my Sub Sea Systems' family, whom I have seen every workday for 9 years. I will also miss the innovative ideas SSS is involved with.

Hannah and Christina

What skills have you learned at SSS that you will take with you to your new gig?

Now that I will have my own employees, I plan to treat them like family, just as SSS’ management treated their employees.

What is the name of your new business? Give it a shameless plug.

Red Rooster Burgers & Brew!

Red Rooster Burgers & Brew Ice Cream Counter!

How did you come up with the business’ name?

For many years locals referred to the building that we’re purchasing as the “R&R.” We wanted to "go retro" and integrate R&R back into the business name. Ashley runs a coffee trailer on the premises called Red Rooster Coffee Stop. (R&R / Red Rooster). We decided to establish a connection to both businesses, so we chose Red Rooster Burgers & Brew. We can’t wait to start!

What are some of your favorite memories of working at SSS?

With SeaTREK, I enjoyed working with the Operators, helping them brand their business or getting them ready for operation by processing their SeaTREK Guide certifications. The Operators are extended members of the SSS family.

With FunCat, I enjoyed rebranding it to SolarCat, helping to give it a more desirable look and watching it morph into a solar energy-making machine. ☺

Clear Lounge was an amazing project to work on. Creating large format graphics, helping with the layout, and every little tiny detail was fun and challenging!

Aquaticar took me to another level of design and really got my brain working. Helping to design part of the car, and laying out the system for potential clients to visualize what they could do with an Aquaticar system was very rewarding.

Deep Dive VR is another fun, large-format project. Projects like this (from conception to production) are fun because we get to create everything that is put in front of potential clients. Everything from imagery to actual models of what the project will look like when built. Modeling the projects in 3D was a highlight of mine, but mostly I reveled in creating the mini models. I really get a kick out of creating something on a small level that mimics the actual finished, full-sized product.

REEF ALLIANCE cleanup day is a day I try not to ever miss and have only missed one cleanup day due to my son Jordan’s football schedule, (GO JUNIOR GRIZZLIES!) It’s a nice way to give back to the community and help our world have a little less garbage in its oceans.

Christina and her kids- James, Ashley, and Jordan

What would you like to add as your final farewell?

This is not farewell! This is, "see you this weekend for Happy Hour!" Haha ☺ ...and bring the office dogs!

We wish Christina the greatest success with her new business and look forward to a "company outing" for burgers, brews, and celebratory ice cream!

As we approach our 20th anniversary this month, we pause for a moment of reflection and attempt to define 20 years of passion and hard work. It seems like it was just a couple years ago that we started our very first Sea TREK helmet diving program at Xcaret Park in Mexico.

Over the years, we have been fortunate to travel the world, establish new locations, and work with talented operators and certified Sea TREK Guides, whose dedication and commitment have helped Sea TREK grow beyond our wildest expectations. Together, we have established over 50 Sea TREK locations and made the underwater world accessible to millions of guests!

We have many memories and milestones to celebrate, however, we’ve narrowed it down to some of the most significant highlights from the past 20 years. Join us for a walk down memory lane!

Getting ready to plan your next vacation? Like most of today’s travelers, you’re probably more likely to head over to the web than visit a travel agency. In fact, the Internet has exploded with travel planning options, such as TripAdvisor, Expedia and Airbnb. Today’s travelers have a dizzying array of tools to plan and book their own vacations, without leaving their sofas. And, there are numerous websites that provide reviews from previous guests, so travelers can easily find out what others experienced on their vacations.

Like most travel-related businesses, the many positive reviews posted about our Sea TREK operators are vital to the success of their locations. We’re always thankful when guests take the time to review their Sea TREK or Clear Lounge experiences, especially since the vast majority of the reviews we receive are positive…some even inspirational! And, we are grateful for the awards we receive based on consumer reviews, such as TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence, received by Clear Lounge Cozumel for three years in a row and Sea TREK Cayman for five years in a row. And though it’s rare that we receive anything outside of a four or five-star review, we do occasionally receive feedback that provides us with opportunities to improve guest experiences. Reviews that are less than perfect can have great value in helping us grow.

Sometimes, mixed in with all of the great reviews, we will find one that is a bit…quirky. Whether it’s a genuine sense of humor or too many vacation daiquiris that bring out these “creative” reviews, we do enjoy reading some of the more obscure comments. Without naming names, here are some of our favorites (these are real reviews for Sea TREK at various locations).

“The Sea TREK is a great underwater adventure, especially for those who have a total dread of even putting their head underwater in a shower. I know, I am married to one of them.“

And here's one of our all-time favorites:

“OK ladies I'm well over 60 and have a little bit of a beer belly, which is probably fatty tissue…I've got a little bit of fat. Fat floats. Bottom line, this adventure is a 10 out of 10, but check for fatties that need a bit of extra weight.”

We certainly appreciate the creative writing that goes into some of these “reviews”!

Of course, our favorite reviews are those that express emotion and appreciation for their Sea TREK adventure. For some participants, Sea TREK is not just an excursion; it’s a bucket list item or even a life-changing experience.

“9-year-old and 68-year-old son and dad. We did the SeaTREK together. It was just the two of us with a guide and a member of staff watching from above. Once in the water my son, who was initially apprehensive, had a ball!”

“My wife and I are 62 years old. We don't know how to scuba dive and we aren't great at snorkeling either, but could easily do this!”

“My other half and I did SeaTREK and it was absolutely incredible! I suffer from anxiety and not once did I feel anxious. The staff and instructors make you feel so calm and at ease.”

“This excursion was awesome for two reasons, it was just awesome being down there, and the people were great! I also got engaged 20 feet under water!“

“I was thrilled that I didn't allow my claustrophobia to ruin this adventure for me. I felt safe and the helmet provided plenty of space and air for me to overcome my fears. The guides were patient and made sure everyone knew the necessary hand signals and felt comfortable during their time underwater. I would highly recommend this excursion to others. Don't miss the opportunity to see all the beautiful sea life under the water and have fun with your family & new friends in the process. This is an awesome experience from start to finish.”

“I was hesitant to do SeaTREK because I cannot swim. All staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable the whole time. Once we reached the ocean floor, it was so clear and beautiful I forgot all fears and enjoyed the experience. I’m thankful that my husband talked me into it - would recommend and do again!”

And this TripAdvisor review, for SeaTREK in Lanzarote, Spain, says it all:

“Last year, on August 12th, my husband and son did SeaTREK. I really wanted to do it also but it wasn't possible. I talked to the staff and they really wanted to give me the same experience as my husband and son had. I could see that this was a big wish for them! At the end of the year, there was the first youtube video…the first disabled person doing SeaTREK!!! I cried seeing that video…so beautiful!

Exactly one year later, it was my turn! I had no idea how I fit in a wetsuit. No problem! Within 2 minutes they helped me in it! They are very kind and took good care of me. They explained everything very well…at all times in the water, I felt safe…. What an amazing experience! They make dreams come true!

This will be with me forever. When I was in the water the tears kept coming, so beautiful and how amazing that these guys…could make my dream come true! Thank you all for making things possible for people like me!”

My how time has flown! Our awesome operator in Cairns, Australia (on the Great Barrier Reef) is celebrating its first year of Sea TREKking!

And speaking of flying, Sub Sea Systems’ Director of Water Operations and Safety (and resident fish nerd) Carl Hanson, took a trip down under to check in with this awesome operator! Here’s what Carl had to say about his lengthy but exciting journey.

Q: Why did you take the journey to Australia?
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of our operator in Cairns! We have new staff at Reef Magic, so I wanted to get to know them. I also did a site visit, which included training the new coordinators, and conducting a safety and equipment inspection. We reviewed some new ideas for marketing Sea TREK, too! It’s helpful for operators to have an “outside eye” for the program - someone who does not see it daily and can observe with fresh eyes.

Q: How long was the trip?
I left California on May 26th and got back on June 2nd. What’s interesting about this is that I arrived on the 28th, and left Australia on the 2nd. I left Sydney at 10am, and arrived in LA at 6am on the same day! Time traveling!

Q: What was your travel route?
Sacramento to Los Angeles, CA
L.A. to Sydney
Sydney to Cairns

On the return trip:
Cairns to Sydney
Sydney to L.A.
L.A. to Sacramento

I was fortunate to receive an upgraded seat from Sacramento to L.A. Then, I got an upgrade to business class from L.A. to Sydney, which scored me a much-appreciated bed! From Sydney to Cairns, I was upgraded to first class again. It pays to be nice... and to be a frequent flyer!

The only real issue I encountered was the very last leg of the trip. Flying from L.A. to Sacramento, the cargo door got stuck, so we had to wait for 2.5 hours for our luggage. Luckily, I had a 4-hour layover. Whew!

Q: How was their first year as a Sea TREK operator?
They did really well for their first year! The Reef Magic team loves the product (they were using another brand of helmet diving system prior to implementing Sea TREK). The Sea TREK helmets are easier to use and they do not require a weight belt. Additionally, the helmets require a smaller footprint when sitting on the deck so they are able to have more helmets.

The operators at Reef Magic really want to help more people enjoy the Great Barrier Reef, and Sea TREK affords them that opportunity.

Q: What is unique about this particular Sea TREK adventure?
The uniqueness stems from the reef itself. For a non-diver to be able to access the reef and all of its residents is incredible! In showing more people the reef, we increase awareness of the necessity of conservation efforts. Putting people there “live and in person” really brings home the need to preserve the reef and life within.

Q: What’s new in the area?
ScUber! Travelers can now take a very unique trip to the reef– on an Uber branded submarine! All you need is the Uber app to call for your ScUber to pick you up... and a mere $3000 per person!

Q: What did you do in your free time?
I took a helicopter tour of the reef! This was my first helicopter ride. Seeing the reef from this viewpoint was so different. You can see large groupings of animals, like sea turtles. Manta and Eagle rays are also visible from the air. I spent time with the team socializing and getting to know them. It’s great to establish relationships, so I can put a face to the name when speaking over the phone or via email. They know me now and know that I’m eager to help whenever needed. Q: What animals did you encounter at this location?
Maori wrasse, Wally! Hawksbill sea turtles, white tip sharks, and an insane assortment of fishes and corals. The Great Barrier Reef is teeming with life.

Monday, May 27th is Memorial Day in the U.S. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to honor those who have died in service. The day is typically celebrated by paying respects to memorials of those lost in wartime, attending parades and local events, or spending time appreciating family.

While the day was specifically created to honor those that have given their lives to protect our country, we also recognize our living veterans and the sacrifices they have made or continue to make, while in service. Sea TREK operators across the United States honor these heroes by offering a variety of discounts and special events, just for veterans.
OdySea Aquarium and Wings for Warriors Partnership
This program, which started on October 15th, 2018, provides local veterans and their loved ones the unique opportunity to take a SeaTREK helmet dive. Offered on the second Monday of every month, participants enjoy complimentary admission to OdySea and a free helmet diving adventure. The program was created in conjunction with Wings for Warriors, a volunteer, non-profit organization designed to support wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Read about Wings for Warriors here.

So far, the veterans who have participated in the OdySea Wings for Warriors program have described SeaTREK as therapeutic and a fantastic way to forget about life’s challenges.

This week, an incredible story of animal and human interaction went viral across social channels. A beluga whale in Norway, suspected of being a Russian “spy”, returned a cell phone to an observer. Obviously eager to please, the whale cheerfully returned the phone that was accidentally dropped into the ocean!

While the story would be unbelievable without footage, animals assisting humans are not as rare as one might think. Stories of creatures cooperating with humans and giving them a helping paw or fin can be found across the web. Here are a few of our favorites!

Long-distance swimmer, Adam Walker, was trekking through New Zealand’s Cook Strait when a 6-ft. shark visited him– likely, a great white. Just as the shark approached, a pod of 10 dolphins appeared and accompanied him on his journey, protecting him from a potential attack! Check out the video here!

While amazing, this is not that unusual. Dolphins have been known to assist people in a variety of perilous conditions. Dolphins’ sonar and ability to detect distress appear to give them a uniquely intuitive connection to humans and an altruistic nature. In fact, some call dolphins the "real" man's best friend!

In 1996, a crowd of visitors at Brookfield Zoo just outside of Chicago, looked on in horror as they saw a toddler tumble more than 15 feet into a habitat, landing near seven gorillas. But, as zoo patrons cried out for help for the 3-year-old boy lying on the concrete below, an unlikely hero emerged.

Binti-Jua, a western lowland gorilla, grabbed the boy, cradled him in her arms, carried him to a doorway and laid him gingerly at the feet of waiting paramedics. The female gorilla appeared to act out of pure compassion for the injured boy.

Binti-Jua means "daughter of sunlight" in Swahili. As an infant, she had little mothering. Born in the Columbus Zoo in Ohio in March 1988, officials said her mother treated her with indifference. Humans had to hand feed Binti with a bottle. Raised by humans, she paid it all back that heroic day by saving the little boy. Binti-Jua was rewarded by the public and received not only high accolades but also gift baskets of fruit. You can watch Binti-Jua protect her new friend here.

Binti-Jua is not the only known gorilla hero. In 1986, a silverback gorilla named Jambo rescued five-year-old Levan Merritt, who fell 12 feet into a gorilla enclosure at Jersey Zoo in the United Kingdom. After the fall, the gorillas living in the enclosure began to circle the unconscious child. Jumbo placed himself between the boy and the other gorillas as if to say “don’t touch”! Jambo stood guard by the boy, rubbing his back as if to soothe him. Watch the incredible footage!

Back to our beautiful and charming friend, the beluga whale. Freediver Tang Yun was competing at Polarland Aquarium in Harbin, China, when she suddenly felt paralyzed in her legs and sunk to the bottom of the cold arctic pool. "I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me – I was dead," Yun said.

Enter Mila, the beluga! Mila spotted Yun and guided her to safety by placing Yun's leg in her mouth and pushing her to the surface. “I felt this incredible force under me," Yun said. An organizer of the event credited Mila with saving Yun's life: "She's a sensitive animal who works closely with humans and I think this girl owes her life to Mila."

In the early 1970s, Yvonne Vladislavich was traveling on a boat off the coast of Mozambique when the boat’s engine stopped working. The boat remained adrift until it was sunk by a wave.

Yvonne was a very good swimmer and decided to try to swim to shore. However, some sharks had other plans for her. Six sharks started circling her and kept coming closer…until heroic dolphins arrived. The dolphins kept the sharks away and followed Yvonne as she drifted 25 miles to a buoy.

Yvonne said that she is sure she would have drowned if she hadn’t received assistance from the dolphins. She frequently got tired during the journey and would have gone under if the dolphins hadn’t kept her above the water. She was the only survivor of the four people on the boat.

And in the most dramatic fashion, Rheal Guindon is very lucky to be alive... On a camping trip with his parents in Canada, he remained on shore while his parents fished from a nearby boat. The boat overturned and sadly, his parents drowned in front of him. He attempted to walk to town, but as it grew dark, he dropped to the cold ground and began crying. He felt something furry press against him as he fell asleep. The next morning, he discovered three beavers snuggling him. Had it not been for them, he would have frozen to death in the sub-zero temperatures that night.

These incredible stories illustrate how little we really know about animals and their capacity to understand when a fellow being is in need. We may be more alike than we are different!
As a resort or boat rental operations manager, you’re faced with the challenges of keeping your guests happy and encouraging repeat visits by offering a variety of new and exciting activities. Whether it’s a family of four or a couple in their sixties, providing your guests with fun things to do, while not busting your budget is likely at the top of your priority list!

While jet skis and giant water trikes are fun for some, not everyone is looking for heart-pumping action or a water workout. And, some personal watercraft can be tricky to maneuver, which can be frustrating for guests. Vacationers looking for relaxation on the water do not want to waste precious vacation time learning how to operate an unfamiliar watercraft.
Enter the FunCat solar-electric catamaran! From San Diego to Spain, FunCats are popular rentals at resorts, private islands, and beach facilities. FunCats are an ideal addition to a facility’s activities list. FunCats provide guests with blissful relaxation on the water, a family outing, or an easy to maneuver boat for a fishing expedition! Just about anyone can drive a FunCat, which is not only cool for kids but helpful for guests who may have physical challenges that prevent them from managing a larger watercraft.

The FunCat is also very unique in appearance, and when out on the water it draws attention from onlookers. It’s a floating billboard and great “free” advertising tool for beach rental locations.

The eye-popping Pompano Beach Club in Bermuda offers FunCats as a rental product. Pompano is unique in that FunCats are free to use for resort guests, and available to rent at an hourly rate ($80/hr.) for non-resort guests. Not only does the hourly rental rate generate revenue, but FunCat renters may also purchase food and beverages while on property. Tom Lamb, the Managing Director at Pompano shares-

“We have been renting motorized FunCats from our resort’s watersports center for over ten years. Our guests love them because they are so easy to handle and cruise along effortlessly at about 5 miles an hour, enabling our guests to soak up the sunshine and enjoy the spectacular scenery on our shallow sandbar. We often refer to them as “motorized floating chaise lounges!” The FunCats are definitely the most popular rental item we have at our watersports center!”

Several of the World’s largest cruise lines offer FunCat rentals at their private islands, including
Disney’s Castaway Caye in the Bahamas, Carnival’s Mahogany Bay in Honduras, and Norwegian’s Harvest Caye in Belize. This creates more revenue for the cruise lines and more fun for their passengers. In fact, FunCats have been so popular with cruise guests that Carnival recently added two more FunCats to their fleet, and Norwegian ordered four more FunCats to launch at Harvest Caye!

FunCats are a proven revenue generator for watersport rental businesses. One location in San Diego, California, Action Sports Rentals, has over 30 FunCat boats for rent! Rental customers are attracted to the FunCat because they are relaxing– imagine a giant chaise lounge floating on the water, fun to drive– push the button and go! And you can enjoy all the amenities needed for a day on the water– sunshade, storage compartments, ice chest compartment, cup holders and more! Steven Pinard from Action Sports remarks-

“Action Sport Rentals in San Diego has FunCats at six locations. They are one of the most popular items that we rent. A family favorite!”

Staff love the boats because they are very low-maintenance, only requiring battery charging and a freshwater rinse off at the end of each day. Additionally, units with solar panels may not even require additional charging overnight, as they continuously charge throughout a sunny day.

The solar panel kit has become such a popular accessory with FunCat customers that all future boats will include this popular feature. And… drum roll, please… we are re-branding! With the focus on solar power, the FunCat will now be renamed SolarCat, solar-electrically powered catamaran. We are confident this new direction fits with today’s consumers and the market demand for environmentally friendly products. We’re excited about SolarCat and look forward to sharing our new website soon!
Sub Sea Systems Director of Water Operations and Safety, Carl Hanson racks up more frequent flyer miles in a month than most people collect in years! His most recent trip took him across the planet to Dubai. Carl shares his unique adventure with us below.

Q Why did you go to Dubai?

C: I went to visit Our Sea TREK Operator at Atlantis the Palm, Dubai. Atlantis the Palm’s Sea TREK helmet diving is done at its Ambassador Lagoon, part of its incredible Lost Chambers Aquarium, which houses over 65,000 marine animals!

Q: How long were you away?

C: I flew out on March 20th, and I returned on March 26th

Q: What kind of work did you do during your visit?

C: This trip was primarily for site inspection, however, the facility also has a new Training Coordinator, Abdulla. He and I worked together quite a bit during my trip. I also shared some new training techniques for their backpack system.

Q: What was your travel route?

I left Sacramento on the 20th around noon, flew to Dallas. From Dallas, I flew to London, where I scored an upgrade! I was surprised that my upgraded seat was actually a bed. I got to take a shower at the London airport, then traveled on to Dubai. The trip in miles looks like this:

Sacramento to Dallas- 1431

Dallas to Heathrow- 4740

Heathrow-Dubai 3410

Total travel time to get to Dubai, a mere 26 hours

On the way back, I had a stopover in L.A., which added a few extra miles to the return trip.

Q: What surprised you about Dubai?

This was my second trip to Dubai, so I didn’t experience quite as dramatic a culture shock this time around. But what surprised me the most is how accepting the culture is to other cultures. The people of Dubai are perceived as closed off, but they are actually very open to tourists of different cultures.

Also, Dubai is home to some of the largest buildings in the world. It’s also incredibly dusty! When I arrived the visibility was tough. Dubai is set up in a series of villages, and each is like its own small city. For example, Sports City is where the vast majority of the sports bars are. Each city is similar in design but quite different in function.

Q: What is unique about this particular Sea TREK adventure?

C: Aqua Trek at Ambassador Lagoon has so many animals, including Bowmouth guitarfish, eagle rays, zebra sharks, cow nose rays, and thousands of schooling fishes! Sea TREK is done from a ledge that is about 2-3 meters deep. Guests walk out on the ledge and TREK while overlooking the rest of the 30-feet-deep tank. One of the things that we tested was the possibility of bringing people to the bottom. So in the future, TREKs may include a drop to the bottom of the tank!

Q: What did you do in your free time?

C: I met up with a friend from high school, Donte! Donte is in the U.S. Army and happened to be in Dubai on deployment while I was there. I had not seen him in at least 10 years, so it was fun to catch up. We connected on social media, and we met up at Kite Beach.

I also got the chance to visit the Dubai Mall, which happens to house one of the largest suspended aquariums in the world! The tank is 10 million liters and is home to over 140 species including 300 sharks and rays. Who knows, it could someday be home to another Sea TREK operation!

This week, we spent some time chatting with Greg Young, who is a Systems Specialist with Sub Sea Systems (that's a lot of S's!) Greg's relationship with Sub Sea's founder, Jim Mayfield, goes farther back than our company has even existed! Greg shared some of his fondest memories of his lengthy history with the company, as well as his personal background. Read below to learn more about Greg!

Q: When did you first start working with Sub Sea's founder, Jim Mayfield?

G: I met Jim at Dimetrics Welding. It was about 1983!

Q: What was your first project for SSS?

G: I went to Pete Burgin’s (SSS Engineer) shop and helped finish a semi-submarine! Pete was subcontracted to build the sub for SSS, I went and repaired some of the work that had been done on the sub. The Coast Guard had found a leak and I was hired to go and help repair and finish the welding. I think that was in 1994!

Q: You have had the opportunity to travel for SSS. Where have you visited for work?

G: I've taken many work trips and have had the opportunity to travel to Dominica, Fort Lauderdale, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, China, Catalina, San Diego, and Alaska. My favorite was Dominica– when I wasn't working, I took a very cool trip down a river on an inner tube.

Greg working his magic

Q: Out of all of the projects you have done over the years, what was your favorite?

G: Anytime there is a new product for me to work on, it becomes my favorite project! Lately, that's been Aquaticar. I've been building the frames for the latest version of the car. Change and "new" are always good!

Q: You have had quite a lot of experience with the FunCat, Sub Sea Systems' Solar-Electric Catamaran. From ordering parts to fabrication, assembly, and customer service, you know the FunCat inside and out. What is it about the FunCat personal catamaran that you like most?

G: Getting on the water in a FunCat is a lot of fun, and they're easy! When you go out on one, you’ll be smiling. When I send out a FunCat, I know it’s going to make someone happy.

Q: Tell us about your family

G: My wife Kathi and I have been married since 1986 and it still hasn’t 86’d yet! Kathi works as an Accounting Clerk and has been at her job for many years. We have two adult children, Ryan and Alisha. We also have two fur kids, Oreo the Queensland Heeler and Aries, a Boxer/White Husky mix.

Greg with his Daughter, Alisha

Q: What do you do for fun?
G: I enjoy a lot of outdoor activities– golf, motorcycling, dirt bike riding, target shooting, camping, boating, and fishing.

Q: What are you most proud of?
G: My kids. My wife and I raised two great ones!

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
G: It came from a former co-worker, many years ago. I was a trainee, making very little money. The advice was "do a really good job... do your best, and the money will come." Less than three years later I was an "A-level Assembler," with a skill level that was in high demand. I was also the only employee at Dimetrics to win a quality of work award, the only one in that company's history. And, it netted me an extra day off!
